What the Allen + Roth Closet System Range Covers

Three things sit under the name: kits with the spacing already decided, standalone towers that drop into a closet you have, and brackets, rods and loose shelves for building or extending a run. Hartford is the kit most people search for by name, and the wood kits are the solid-shelf end. Whalen Furniture supplies the kits, which is why the box reads LWSCSC or LWSCSBW.

Wood or Wire

Wire is ventilated, lighter, cheaper per foot and forgiving about being cut down. It also lets small items tip through and creases folded clothes across the wire. Wood holds a stack flat, carries more across a span and reads as furniture rather than hardware. It costs more and is far less tolerant of a wall that is out of square.

The test: mostly hanging clothes, linens and shoe boxes, wire does the job. Stacking folded knits, bags or anything you want level and on show, buy wood.

Tower or Kit

Buy the kit when the closet is a standard reach-in and you want it done on a Saturday. The spacing is worked out and there is nothing to design. Go to towers and components when the closet is an odd width, has a return wall, or wants a layout no kit offers.

How to Measure Your Closet

  • Width at the back wall and again at the door opening. Old closets are rarely square, and the smaller number governs.
  • Floor to ceiling at each end of the run, not just in the middle. Floors slope. A half inch of drop across eight feet changes how a tower stands.
  • Depth from the back wall to the inside of the door frame. Check the doors clear a loaded rod, not just an empty shelf.
  • Baseboard height and thickness. A tower stands proud of the wall by that thickness unless you notch the back panel or take the board off.
  • Where the existing brackets land. Before you pull the old shelf out, sketch the closet and mark the bracket holes and stud positions. Those holes are the only free evidence of where the studs are.

How Much Hanging Versus Shelving

Standard closet planning gives a double-hang section roughly 40 to 42 inches of clear height per rod, which is why two rods stack in a normal reach-in with a shelf above. Long hanging for coats and dresses wants closer to 66 to 72 inches in a single drop, and long hanging is what runs a closet out of space.

Measure what you own before you decide the split. Push everything together on the existing rod and measure the bunch. That figure, not the closet width, tells you how much of the run stays hanging.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • The Hartford wood kit is warranted “exclusive of shelves”. The shelves are carved out of the cover on a shelving product.
  • Surface damage is excluded: chipping, flaking, scratches, rust and dents. Overloading a shelf voids the cover, and so does assembling it wrong. Cover is one year, original purchaser only, and does not transfer with the house. Terms are set per category, not brand-wide; the warranty page has the comparison.
  • No registration is required, but proof of purchase is. Photograph the receipt and keep it with the manual.
  • Photograph the model number and item number off the box before it goes out with the recycling. Every route back into support starts with it.
  • Brackets come in Java, Antique Gray, White and Oil-rubbed Bronze. Check the aisle before you call, and match the finish by name. Java and Antique Gray do not read apart on a phone screen.

Fitting It Yourself

These hang on the wall, and the wall is the variable the box knows nothing about. Find the studs across the full width of the run and mark them before you settle a layout. Anything landing between studs needs an anchor rated for the real load, and a rod packed with winter coats weighs more than people expect.

Two things catch people out. The back wall is rarely plumb, so a line measured up from the floor and a level line will not agree; use the level and pack the gap. And a shelf cut to fit cannot be returned, so cut it once the brackets are up and the real opening is measurable.

What Owners Say

The consistent complaint is not the initial build. It is after-sale support once an item retires and the matching tower is no longer listed. People who bought one tower and planned to add a second are the ones who get stuck.

Allen + Roth Closet Systems Questions

Who Makes Allen + Roth Closet Systems?

Not Allen + Roth, which is a Lowe’s private brand rather than a manufacturer. The closet kits are supplied by Whalen Furniture, and the closet kit manual covering the LWSCSC and LWSCSBW models is the evidence rather than any announcement. Lowe’s does not publish a supplier list, so there is no complete one to check against.

What Does the Allen + Roth Closet Warranty Cover?

It is a one-year limited warranty to the original purchaser only, and it is not transferable. The document states that it does not cover chipping, flaking, scratches, rust, dents, or other damages to the surfaces of the product. It is also void if the unit was assembled incorrectly or abused by overloading. There is no brand-wide Allen + Roth warranty, so terms differ from other categories.

Are the Shelves Covered by the Warranty?

Not on the Hartford wood closet kit. Its warranty covers the product “exclusive of shelves”, so the shelves are carved out of the cover on a shelving product. Worth knowing before you call about a sagging or chipped shelf.

How Do I Order a Replacement Part for My Closet Kit?

Parts follow the pattern 00, then the model number, then a dash, then a two-digit component number. On the LWSCSC and LWSCSBW kits the long shelf is 00LWSCSC/LWSCSBW-22 and the complete hardware pack is 00LWSCSC/LWSCSBW-53. Call Lowe’s Parts Plus on 1-866-439-9800 or email PartsPlus@Lowes.com with that number.

Do I Need to Register My Allen + Roth Closet System?

No. No Allen + Roth document requires product registration. Every one of them requires proof of purchase instead, so the receipt is the thing to keep. Warranty claims go through Lowe’s, and the cover is limited to the original purchaser, so it does not pass to a buyer if you sell the house.
